3.4 Neighbourly and journalism
Since Fairfax bought a 22 percent share in Neighbourly in 2014, their stake has increased to 70 percent. Eden says it is important for him to maintain some degree of ownership in the start-up as a demonstration of his commitment to making it work. Having Neighbourly identified as something other than Fairfax is important for its branding. It keeps it fresh and edgy and is important in distinguishing it from a legacy news corporation. Rees (2017) says:
We now own 70 percent of Neighbourly. It is good for Neighbourly to have the energy of a start-up and to be seen as free from the corporate beast. But at the same time it benefits from being part of the corporate beast from having a lot of reporters around the country who want to know about it or want to be involved.
Neighbourly works well with local journalism because it is a place for people to talk and share ideas. For some Fairfax reporters, Neighbourly has become a convenient tool to enable them to do more with less. Ruby Macandrew (personal communication, May 30, 2017), a community journalist for The Wellingtonian, says Neighbourly is a way for her and her colleagues to do the job of reporting the community from the office. While acknowledging it was good to do some shoe leather journalism, she says:
You can get the comment of 12 residents without having to move. You can get as much comment as you want as long as you put up a disclaimer saying this is for print and you are good.
